Dentist who allegedly poisoned wife's protein shakes expected to plead not guilty

WASHINGTON (TND) A dentist in Colorado who was accused of fatally poisoning his wife of 23 years is expected to plead not guilty to multiple charges, including first-degree murder, according to reports.

A dentist in Colorado who was accused of fatally poisoning his wife of 23 years is expected to plead not guilty to multiple charges, including first-degree murder, according to reports.

The Associated Press said James Toliver Craig is slated to appear in court on October 9 after his arraignment was postponed.

The media outlet also previously reported he had searched online for answers to questions such as, “Is arsenic detectable in an autopsy?” and “How to make murder look like a heart attack."

Police previously said they believed Craig laced his wife's pre-workout protein shakes with poison.

In March, the Aurora Police Department charged Craig with first-degree murder after his wife, Angela Craig, passed away. Her death followed her third visit to the hospital within a month, as she said she was experiencing severe headaches and dizziness.

Authorities said a warrant for Craig's arrest was issued after his wife was declared medically brain dead and "doctors made the decision to take the victim off life support."

Authorities later determined she had been poisoned with cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a substance found in over-the-counter eye drops.

Police alleged her husband was meeting another woman, fellow dentist Karin Cain, who flew from Texas to visit him.

Detectives began investigating Craig after his dental practice partner and friend, Ryan Redfearn, told a nurse that Craig had ordered potassium cyanide even though they did not need it for their work, according to an arrest warrant laying out evidence gathered by investigators.

“When the suspicious details of this case came to light, our team of officers and homicide detectives tirelessly worked to uncover the truth behind the victim’s sudden illness and death,” Division Chief Mark Hildebrand previously said. “It was quickly discovered this was in fact a heinous, complex and calculated murder. I am very proud of our Major Crimes Homicide Unit’s hard work in solving this case and pursuing justice for the victim.”

Craig's defense attorney, Andrew Ho, said he expects a jury trial.
